NEW HAVEN, Conn. (InvestigateTV) — In 2011, Shay Taylor-Allen was working as a janitor at Yale New Haven Hospital when she was 18. She is now returning years later to the hospital as a resident physician.Taylor-Allen said she took the janitor job after finishing high school because her mother told her she needed to either work or go to school.“And that’s when I got a call back that I got a job as a janitor,” Taylor-Allen said.Taylor-Allen said her mother, Shema, became sick, and doctors did not have answers. She said a doctor asked her a question that changed her outlook.“The doctor pulled me to the side and was like, ‘Does your mother have a history of mental illness?’ And I’m like, ‘Why’d you ask me that?’” Taylor-Allen said.Taylor-Allen said she began researching health care disparities. She then emailed the hospital’s CEO.“I am the janitor that cleans your office. And this is what my mom is going through and I don’t think is right. Is there any way that you can help us?” Taylor-All
