ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU/Gray News) - A backyard beekeeper with tens of thousands of bees in his outdoor hives wanted a closer look at what was happening inside the colony, so he brought one indoors.Tim Huffman said the idea came from a desire to see what his hives were doing at a level he couldn’t access from outside.“I can tell a lot by looking at the outside of a hive, how the bees are coming in and out, when they’re bringing in pollen and nectar, when they have a good population,” Huffman said. “But I can’t see what’s going on inside the hive.”That led Huffman to look into what is known as an observation hive.“It’s like an aquarium,” he said. “Instead of fish, it has bees.”The hive connects to the outdoors through a pipe that allows the bees to come and go freely. Getting that system right took some trial and error.“Let’s just say that the first time I had this...
