SARASOTA, Fla. (WWSB) - Nitrogen is an important element that we need to be on the lookout for in our bay ecosystems. According to officials with the Suncoast Waterkeeper, excess nitrogen in the waterways can lead to red tide. In order to combat this, the Suncoast Waterkeeper has started the Stop the Flow of Nitrogen Campaign... and they need your help! Especially if you live in Bradenton near El Conquistador Parkway.Pia Ronquillo-See, the Water Quality and Pollution Specialist for the Suncoast WaterKeeper explains, “It’s a campaign to reach out to these neighborhoods upstream of Sarasota Bay and try to reduce their nitrogen runoff and raise awareness of nitrogen pollution and what it does to the water quality of Sarasota Bay.”Ronquillo-See says, since 2022, the Suncoast Waterkeeper has been monitoring three conveyances that lead into Sarasota Bay… those three conveyances have been consistently over the safety threshold for total nitrogen.Local mosquito authorities kicking up protocol
